By the 1840's, Philadelphia was the epicenter of the gothic novel. In addition to Edgar Allan Poe, Philadelphia was home to writers Charles Brockden Brown, Wieland Focus, Robert Montgomery Bird, and George Lippard, all of whom explored the lurid underbelly of American life. A new exhibit at the Library Company explores Philadelphia's role in gothic fiction throughout the 19th century, paying particular attention to the novelists who lived here and wrote about the city.
